The Hours

Three women in different moments of the 20th century fight to be themselves in a world that limits them.

A full day in the life of writer Virginia Woolf —specifically the day she began writing the novel Mrs. Dalloway— forms the core of the plot of The Hours. In parallel, the piece also explores the lives of a book editor and a housewife who, although living in different decades, are deeply connected.

An adaptation of the acclaimed novel by Michael Cunningham (Pulitzer Prize for Fiction), it raises questions about the role of women, emancipation, and the intimate cost of personal freedom.

The Internationaal Theater Amsterdam Ensemble, one of the most influential European companies, returns to the city under the new direction of Eline Arbo, who has established herself as a refreshing voice in the contemporary theatre scene. Her staging of The Hours, acclaimed in cities like Amsterdam and London, arrives in Barcelona as part of the Grec 2025 Festival.

This is an incredibly beautiful story about three women whose lives are inextricably intertwined. All three struggle against the roles assigned to them and seek their own path to freedom. What I love about the book is how Cunningham manages to combine existential themes with social ones through parallel storylines. By portraying women from completely different eras, questions arise about the current level of emancipation and about role patterns that are deeply embedded in our culture. At the same time, it is an intimate portrait of three individuals whose desperate search for freedom has significant consequences for those around them.
